Medfield Veterinary Clinic‘s staff is filled with highly trained and experienced animal lovers who care deeply about their jobs. Everyone makes it a goal to learn everything they can about the field they love in order to give our patients the highest level of care.


Dr. Richard Crowell was born in Boston and grew up in Needham, MA graduating from Needham High School in 1977. He graduated from Fairfield University with a major in Biology in 1981 and then graduated from Boston College with a Master’s degree in Biology in 1985. Dr. Crowell received his DVM degree in 1990 from the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Crowell owned the Franklin Veterinary Clinic in Franklin, MA for 10 years. He has worked at the Tufts Emergency Treatment Center in Walpole and the Legion Animal Hospital in Holliston. He started the Medfield Veterinary Clinic in December of 2002.

Dr. Crowell is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association.

Dr. Crowell lives in Medfield with his wife, Deirdre. They have four children along with two dogs and a corn snake.


Dr. Peter Kirk grew up in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2005, after completing a year of clinical education at the University of Georgia. He has been with Medfield Veterinary Clinic since 2006.

Dr. Kirk lives locally with his wife, two daughters, and one cat.


Dr. Sandy Higgins has been practicing small animal veterinary medicine since 1992. She graduated Mount Holyoke College with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1986. After working in a research lab at Children’s Hospital for two years, she earned her DVM degree at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grafton, MA., graduating Cum Laude in 1992. She was also a member of the Phi Zeta Honors Society. After veterinary school, Dr. Higgins completed a 13 month small animal internship at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Jamaica Plain, MA. She has been a general practitioner in the local Boston area ever since! In her spare time, Sandy enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, Daniel and Michael. Her hobbies include ice skating, cooking and gardening. She has two golden retrievers, Champ and Tessie, and a cat named Dusty.


Dr Julie Shields grew up in Ontario, Canada and lived there for 20 years until moving to New Hampshire with her family. She graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in January 2008 after completing a year of clinical education at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (at Virginia Tech). Dr. Shields has been with the Medfield Veterinary Clinic since February 2008.

Dr. Shields lives in Boston with her husband Tyson, their son Kaiden, and their daughter Taylor. They have a Labradoodle named Brinley and a Havanese named Ozzie.


A Massachusetts native, Dr. Sara Buckley grew up on the North Shore where she developed a passion for swimming and a love for animals that began with their first family dog, a goofy and loveable Labrador named Ruffles. She attended Williams College where she studied both Economics and Biology, and also was an All-American swimmer. After working for a few years in corporate finance and veterinary medicine, Sara returned to academia to graduate with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University. During her tenure at Cornell, Dr. Buckley pursued advanced certification in veterinary business management, as well as performed community outreach as a low income veterinary care provider. Dr. Buckley also achieved certification as a Purina Weight Loss Coach. When she is not hiking with her trusty black lab, Molly, Sara can often be found baking and entertaining friends and family, or enjoying a Red Sox game.


Kelly Summerhayes Greenfield joined Medfield Veterinary Clinic in August 2014 after just completing a rotating medicine/surgery internship at Tufts VETS in Walpole. She is originally from London, England but grew up in Sharon, Massachusetts. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in 2006, where she majored in pre-veterinary medicine. After completing her undergraduate degree she moved back to London, England and worked for 2 years as a small animal veterinary technician. Kelly attended St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine, where she earned her DVM degree in 2013. She completed her clinical fourth year at Cornell’s Hospital for Animals. Kelly currently lives in Sharon with her wonderful husband Jeremy and their son Henry. They have 2 Great Danes, Jack and Greta, as well as a kitten named Sally. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with Jeremy, hiking with the dogs, and knitting.
